Aquarian is a conceptual project developed with Albora Technologies, a leader in advanced geolocation solutions. Working with two other designers, we explored how Albora’s technology could help prevent drownings by sending SOS alert from a mobile app to rescuers during emergencies. My main responsibilities included UX research, branding, and redesign of the mobile screens.

At the heart of Aquardian is a mission to instill confidence in swimmers and help reduce drowning incidents. The name Aquardian—a blend of “aqua” and “guardian”—reflects its role as a protector of those at sea.
For the visual identity, I drew inspiration from maritime rescue services of Barcelona and the ocean itself. The color palette of deep blue tones and the bold typography were intentionally selected to convey strength, safety, and trust.
During the audit, I identified outdated components,
unused styles, and inconsistencies across the design library that made the system difficult to scale.
I streamlined it by aligning key elements with the brand—removing clutter and introducing a unified colour palette, tokens for spacing, icons, and typography, along with purposeful components to ensure clarity, consistency,
and scalability.

Designing for Safety and Peace of Mind
Our research highlighted the need to
support swimmers in building confidence
and feeling safer in open water. Taking into
account varying levels of fitness and
stamina, we addressed common challenges like anxiety and unsupervised swims throughthoughtful app design. By offering real-time weather and water data, safe swim
locations, safety resources, and live location sharing with emergency contacts and
maritime rescue services, the app
empowers swimmers with tools to stay
protected. It sets a new standard in aquatic
safety—combining technology, real-time data, and connectivity to enhance the open water experience

As a conceptual project created for our
stakeholder, Aquarian demonstrated the
potential of Albora’s technology in high-risk sports. When we presented the design
and conducted usability testing with real
swimmers, the feedback was very positive. Many participants expressed that this
solution would be a valuable and reassuring companion during their open water swims, enhancing situational awareness and reducing emergency response times throughout their journey in the app.
